This is so good I've made it sticky (after correcting the spelling in the title!)

Word of warning

'Low level' hard drive tools can easily 'brick' the drive if you get it wrong...

If you need to ask the question then you're unlikely to understand the answer so leave well alone unless you're absolutely sure what you're doing.
