The Guardian published a list of popular myths that have taken hold and debunked them.

Two favourites:

1 We don't make anything in the UK any more: In fact, manufacturing contributes around 11% of GDP, versus around 9% from the City

2 The benefits bill is spent on unemployed and disabled people:  In fact, half of UK benefit spending actually goes on state pensions. And benefit fraud is estimated  at 0.7% of the benefits bill. At £1.2bn, this is actually less than the amount that is underclaimed.

Maybe the reference fell out of favour when they realised that there so many satanists and child killers on the island are taking up lots of space.  Grin
