Mr & Mrs Instein, in Leicester, for some reason (best known to themselves) thought it might be a good idea to name their son Francis... the unfortunate soul grew up to be 6'5" with a square head which probably didn't help...

He was a regular customer of mine for a number of years.

There was a Teresa Green in my junior school, and a Tony Legg in grammar school. Nobody made fun of him - his dad ran a boxing club and Tony was a star pupil!

How about this:

While my Uncle was visiting back in the 70's, he stood in the middle of Pretoria laughing his head off! He had spotted a clothing shop with the name 'DIE MANS WINKEL' - which in Afrikaans means The Man's Shop! He said look - "The Man's Winkle!" giggle

Googling 'winkel' gave me a most surreal result as the first hit...

There was a similar thing when I was younger, about book titles and the authors.

The Dirty Road........................By G.G. Dunnit
The Haunted House...................By Hugo First
The High Cliffs........................By Eileen Dover

etc etc.

I used to use clichés all the time, now I avoid them like the plague, these days a cliché to me, is like a red rag to a bull.
"I'm an idiot, I've just realised"..."I don't think"....outrageously quoted out of context.

Afrikaans has some words which can sound extremely rude to British ears!

I think it's inherited a lot of those from Dutch, which in turn got them from German.
