There have been problems with MSE ( Microsoft Security Essentials Anti-Virus)  updating itself, either through the program or via Windows update the last 2 days. It will continually tell you that you are up to date when you are in fact several definition updates behind
Currently at 7 am GMT on 23 March 2012 the latest published definitions are 1.123.212.0
MSE or WU will only give 1.123.194.0
Yesterday it was 4 definition sets behind

THe way to update is to do a manual update from http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/definitions/howtomse.aspx

check the update tab on MSE & see what the latest virus definitions version is
if it is lower than 1.123.212.0   and pressing the update button won't download an updated version, then do a manual update

Read the page carefully as there are 64 bit updates and 32 bit updates
If you have a 64 bit OS then MSE should be 64 bit ( as far as I know the installer automatically installs a 64 bit version on a 64 bit sytem )
Don't try to install 64 bit updates on a 32 bit system as it will go wrong.
if it is 212 or higher, then it is fine

I got that on the XP PC that I use for i-player etc. I ignored it to watch Gardeners World.

But when I booted up to fix the problem the following day the problem had vanished.

It does on Vista and 7 - all by itself. But on XP even though there is a 64 bit version as well as the normal 32 bit it doesn't choose the right one - you have to help it out and pick the one you need yourself.

On XP the 64 bit version is not supposed to be supported and only 32 bit is available
but as 64 bit XP is rare and in reality is server 2003 which is not a supported OS
