Finally got a mate to upgrade his pc. Without going into to much detail, it is new out the box, but is pre-loaded with Xp ( I know, I know ).

Question. I have seen this advertised,

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Upgrade Edition DVD for XP.

Am I right in thinking that you can not "over the top" install W7 on Xp, but have to do a clean install. I know a clean install is always preferable, especially when a machine has been getting clogged up for years, but as this is a "new" machine anyway, I was just wondering. There are conflicting answers when googling.

 thank you

As the PC is new, is there any reason not to do a clean install?

If it is an 'upgrade edition' does this mean that it needs the basics of XP to be there for it to install, whereas a full copy of W7 does not ?.

there is no upgrade edition of W7 all versions are actually full installs
any XP upgrade to W7 needs a full install BUT if he inserts the disc while XP is running, then W7 will treat it as an upgrade ( providing he has a legal XP install, that is, it will verify he has a legal XP install and is therefore allowed to use the cheaper upgrade edition rgather than a full version) & create a new install of W7 but might keep any user docs & settings in windows.old.
