For the last couple of days I've had snags booting. i would get the screen with the F options at the bottom, change boot sequence etc, but then just a flashing cursor top left, constantly. If i shut down and rebooted, it worked.

Today it would not boot at all, just the flashing cursor.

After a bit of faffing with external drives and stuff i got the message, "the boot selector failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I changed the boot sequence to make the hdd first, and now all seems ok.

I did note that the time was 3 hours fast after all that, and KIS2012 is not working.

Off to look at KIS and Event Viewer.

System Restore fails no matter which restore point I choose.

 thank you

sounds like flat mobo battery, so losing bios info
that, in theory, shouldn't happen with a laptop but it does and some laptops have changable bios batteries & some don't

But that can also be caused by a faulty or damaged charging or thermal/overheat sensor or the main laptop battery being close to end of life

The other problem can be the hard disc startig to fail. whichever way Ray, unfortunately it doesn't look good & is very likely to mean spending £££

If it's a changeable bios battery, you can buy them very cheaply from 7dayshop - the most common type is £5.39 for a dozen, delivered.

Thanks peeps, I have shedloads of the bios batteries, the hard drive is a couple of months old, but the main battery is pretty buggered, so that may well be the culprit.

 thank you for the feedback.

If it happens again, should I shutdown, remove the battery, plug in the mains adaptor and see what occurs.  thinking

But most laptops do not use that type of battery - they use the MR version which is the rechargeable one. Stick a CR battery into a socket that uses a MR one and it could very well go bang!

Besides that the 2032 size is not very common in laptops - they tend to use the smaller sizes. If you are lucky you can change it, if you are not it may be soldered onto the board and is a real pain to change.

Sounds like a dodgy battery to me too. Sad

Not what he'll have wanted to hear - if it is the soldered-in type it'll be a right balls-ache  paranoid

look for section 5.7

It's just going to be a coin battery with two wires soldered to it with a HP label stuck onto some shrink plastic wrapping. At least it plugs into the mobo.
