Had a first responder out to  about bed-time because her breathing suddenly became so distressed she couldn't form a word, and she couldn't even move the first responder's peak-flow meter at all. They managed to calm the worst of the distress by oxygen mix nebulising her on the way to hospital in the ambulance the first-responder called out. She doesn't appear to be in any immediate danger, although a chest x-ray reveals her heart is enlarged, and she's got a patch of what's most probably infection at the side of a lung, along with lots of fluid - she's had a very heavy cold so she's full of gunge. Because of the enlarged heart and a bit of fluid they're trying to shift with IV diuretics they'll investigate further over the next couple of days - they've drawn bloods to look for infection markers etc to decide whether they want to go with IV antibiotics too. Shifting some of the fluid she's carrying should make breathing easier, but they still need to figure out where it's just down to infection or something else that needs dealing with - coupled with the enlargement of her heart they've got a couple of lines of inquiry to explore. As a former very heavy smoker the doctors says there's always the possibility of a smoking related condition behind all this. As it's the first time she's ever had this kind of acute episode, as you might imagine she's scared shitless - all of us bar Donut probably take breathing a little too much for granted until the day it stops happening... I'll pop in and see her during the day tomorrow, and report back as soon as there's something to report. |

That sounds very scarey for both of you. To witness someone struggling to breath is very distressing. Been there, done that. Only had one bad asthma attack in my life, which was down to an extremely quick allergy to old dust in woollen blankets.
I sincerely wish you both well and will be thinking of you both until we hear better news.

I've just rang the ward for a progress report and she was able to speak to me herself on the phone too, which is a very good sign.
I'm just on my way to visit and take a few supplies - I've printed this thread for her too.

So sorry to hear is in hospital, glad she is talking ok now, they seem to be able to get rid of the fluid quite quickly, when Tony was unable to breathe with all the fluid he seemed to improve in 10 minutes or so with the meds in the drip. Progress report... I saw just after lunch and she's looking a lot better. They've sorted out some medication to keep things on an even keel while they investigate further - they have more tests running about now. Because she's now pretty stable they 'may' discharge her this evening, but that decision hasn't been taken yet... it'll depend on the results of the tests they're doing now. She'll probably have to pop back into out-patients for some follow-up work regardless. Magic hates me right now - he thinks I've eaten because she's disappeared, and he seems worried he might be next...  |

I wish we stil had matrons like her in hospitals today
Everybody had respect for Matron & was scared to upset her. Wards & corridors were clean & nurses actually nursed & looked after patients, instead of just dishing out drugs & expecting an untrained, underpaid, non english speaking ward orderly to wash, bathe & move the patient

The PC world we live in these days has caused a big change in how the medics (nurses, doctors etc) interact with you. So sad... They ask permission before they even touch you. I blame the crazy idiots who want to sue every body.
