When I dug mine out you didn't so much dig as cut blocks of clay out and stack them above the pond to make the next level. All my area is clay. But I dug mine in the old days when you had fine weather in the summer and wet weather in the winter. Now all the seasons are blending into one another. Stick some further piccies up as you progress - I like to see how ponds work out.

Will do, we've calculated the volume, chosen the pump, filter and liner but although we've pumped it out it was so soft and squishy at the bottom I don't know when Julie will be able to stand up long enough to dig. My project is over the other side of the garden, a circular paved area in front of the conservatory. That involves mixing concrete and laying bricks; yesterday I was of the distinct feeling that I'm getting too old for mixing concrete with a shovel.

Specially with a well aimed spade Sounds like natural justice to me. And you'd fit in that hole no problems, once the money from your house is in the bank.

Not as bad as mine - I bought a second hand pond liner cos of the stupid cost of getting one big enough and spent all day with 3 hosepipes running from morning till night to fill it. Woke the next morning to find most of the water had gone, despite it being set into clay! At least then I found the leaks before going much further and went on to find 10 holes where it looked like it had been nailed to something at one time. Fortunately it has held water for the last 14 years or so without a repeat performance (except for when my pump pumped nearly all the water out one night - but that is a story for another time )

Well puddled, well puddled. We do still want to use a liner because we don't want things to grow into the clay nor have all the sediments that a clay puddled pond would have.

I've been advised to use a sand underlay to prevent stone penetration, but Julie has used cheap duvets before without a problem (she's had 2 ponds before). The liner that we have in our wish list comes with underlay.

I used old carpets underneath my liners - they stink something orrible if you disturb them! But they give excellent protection and mine came at my fave price - free! If you need any water to fill it back up with there is this listed on eBay - item 150839073912 - but seeing as you is not that far away from me water is not exactly in short supply at the moment.

The best pond fuck up I've ever seen was a friend of my brother... he was part-way through getting the liner laid and bedded in when he saw rain forecast, and it was going to arrive long before he expected to be finished.
He had a wonderful brainwave... he erected his tent - sans groundsheet - over the partially completed project so the embryonic pond didn't fill with water before the liner was bedded... that would risk tearing the vinyl (not butyl rubber) liner.
It worked rather too well.
The groundwater rose under the near weightless liner and it floated out of the tent and away towards the river...

Round 3....
Put the pump in, turned the pump on and waited. When it was down to just the squidge at the very bottom I laid on the plank I'd put across the hole and lifted the float switch to turn the pump back on.
It was then that the discharge hose blew off of the outlet and the partly submerged pump sent a column of clay sludge upwards and in my general direction ........
