Thieves have figured out a way to steal BMWs with keyless entry technology. They are able to bypass alarm systems. It is believed that the thieves are gaining access to the cars' On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system to program new key fobs. The vehicles' OBD ports are constantly powered, even when the vehicles are off, and they do not require passwords.

I should say that it serves the posers right having a flashy BWM but realistically, this is a big BIG fault with a car that costs £40,000 +

Hmmmm, bit of a design fault there.
It seems that with ever increasing sophistication of anti theft devices the easier it is to by pass them.
When I get my Veyron, I shall hire a few ex SAS chaps to watch over it when it is parked at my Mansion.

and of course a very high proportion of the blame has to go to the wonderful EU & its silly burghers who insist on total  freedom of trade and a non franchised dealer must be able to service any make or model, despite the risks & dangers involved

All cars sold in Europe must permit open and unsecured access to OBD codes, so non-franchised mechanics and garages may read the codes

It is the same stupid EU regulations that allow non english speaking Doctors, nurses, vets, pharmacists etc from EU to come over here & work & kill our patients

It is a bit of a double edged sword. If car makers only allowed owners to have their cars serviced etc. at their franchised dealers, then the prices would probably be even higher than they are now.
Having a car of any make with the owner allowed to take it to any garage helps to keep prices down by competition.
Which in this case means that fiddles like this are going to get worse, or I may be wrong.
