Given the scope and efficiency of some modern gangs, I'd not be too surprised to see a ready-made botnet based on this technology sold to an unsuspecting public - all it needs is one man inside a manufacturing plant to 'get at' the machine that flashes the bios chips before assembly.
Of course the scope for selling a 'custom' batch to a large company is higher, and if a government decided they wanted to keep tabs on a decent percentage of their populace I can't imagine many better ways to avoid being accidentally rumbled by Kaspersky et al...
Could you imagine how much fun somebody with a reason to could have having dreamed up an iPad equivalent?

Entirely possible. When my hardware-hacking partner-in-crime gets back from defcon in a few days we're going to do some work on some form of automated clean-up tool to see if it's practical - a lot will depend on the availability of clean firmware images because almost all of it's closed-source which makes it very hard to verify the code that should be in there. This is where closed-source is a really bad idea as it makes it damn near impossible to defend against this kind of crap. (Pat's a jammy bastard - just spend a week at Black Hat in Vegas, then flew overnight to Rio for defcon... I reckon it must be my turn next year... ) |
