Title: Casper's Eye Operation - Fingers Crossed This Time
Post by: Casper the Ghost on Sep 17, 06, 04:33 PM
Have finally secured a date to return to see the top man in Croydon to get me eye sorted out hopefully instead of being stuck in the orrible situation I have endured for the last 10 years.

I will let peeps know how it all goes once I am able to see again afterwards.

 :yup:  :yup:  :wave1:

Cos there doesn't seem to be any other way of getting it onto the calender. As far as I could work out you have to post something somewhere to get an event onto the calender so I thought I would put it somewhere where nobody would notice it and the event would then duly pop up in about 6 weeks time.
How was I to know you lot would go reading the Test forum!!!

Thanks for the good luck messages - I will be the first in this country to have 5 operations on the same eye if it all goes well. Maybe even get the other eye done so my poor brain cell doesn't have to work quite so hard working with one very long sighted and one very short sighted eye at the same time.

More nearer the time - maybe in the Chat forum next time. :)

And seeing as how I didn't actually think this post was going to get read anyway I should add that I am scheduled for the return trip to Croydon on Friday 27th October so it is some time off yet.

Part two reply - it seems to have escaped from the Test forum to the Chat forum for some reason. ??? ???

I put it in Test cos it wasn't really meant to be read, looks like someone thought I had made a mistook and moved it here.

You can blame me for that one, I suggested it should be moved.

You wouldn't have been the first to have posted in the wrong forum by mistake, and although I did already know your surgery wasn't until late October, I thought you were just letting people know you'd finally received a date for it.

Someone did! Didn't make any difference though - probably why you don't see many events posted on the calender.

It says
Quote
Where this option has been configured (it's not standard 'out of the box'), you can post an event by selecting Calendar from the main menu followed by Post Event from the calendar screen. What you see now is a Start new topic screen with supplementary fields for the event title, date and target board, which simply add your event to the calendar and create a link back to your post in that board
which suggests that you "start a new topic" so do you not have to actually post something somewhere?

When you post something to the calender, it stashes it, then it's the calender that posts it to the board at the appropriate time, so although the tool 'looks' similar, it behaves differently.

If that's the case, why did Casper's thread which was associated to his adding an event to the calender appear yesterday and not on the 27th October? If you look at this event in the calender, and click the link it created, you'll see you're taken to this thread.

It looks to me as though the associated thread is posted at the time the event is added, and not on the date the event actually occurs.

Razor added the 'Talk like a pirate day' event. How do I know this? Because the link in the calender associated to that event takes you back to a thread of his he attempted to delete and couldn't.

I have posted "Wishing you luck" on the calendar to be displayed on 27th October, On Casper's topic.

Watching to see if it is stashed somwhere and will re-appear that day.

If you go to that date on the calendar you will see a red * I think that is my message.

OK  - I have put me testpilot hat on again and worked out how to use this calender thingy. Look at 23rd September and I have put a new event on the calender.

RTFM is a waste of time so jus follow ole Casp's advice and all will be clear.

Go to where you want your event on the calender and actually click on the date itself in the top left of the square. That opens a calender event posting window thingy. Enter what you want the event called and untick the "link to a thread" option (or whatever it was called). Submit the post and it then appears on the calender - complete with little red * too.

So you can put an event on the calender without linking to a thread. :)

But it is very nice to see that nearly 200 visits to this thread have been made already and I have 5 weeks or so left before the day.

Wonder if I should film the op and post the video on here? :)

BTW - the reference was to Donut's birthday.

Well time has fair passed by and my trip to ole Croydon town is nearly upon us and I will be making the journey down on Friday.
That means that tonight is probably the last time I will be on-line for quite some time, all depending on what is done and how well it heals.
It also means the last time I will drive for a while too and maybe I will get a little fitter walking rather than taking the car. :)

I will be back . . . . . :) :)

Big BossMan of Optimax is funding this all for free and has agreed that whatever I want they will cover the cost of to give it the very best chance of improving my sight.

Don't know if they intend doing the second eye at the same time till I get down there tomorrow when they will make the decision.

I hope that doesn't mean it's your job she's applying for while your back is turned... I've worked for organisations where that wouldn't have been too great a surprise. ::)
Title: Re: Casper's Eye Operation - Fingers Crossed This Time
Post by: Casper the Ghost on Oct 26, 06, 06:51 PM
Nope - I have seen the two jobs she is interested in. One is at the same scale as she is at doing very similar work with the advantage that she would get a permanent contract. The other is more or less out of her league and would put her on a much higher pay scale. As for my job she is having kittens just thinking about the next few weeks so doesn't want all the hassle of it full time! :)

Actually when we interviewed her last year we took the decision not to tell any of the candidates that I would probably not be around for the first month when they started. To be fair she was well and truly chucked in the deep end and did very well - though I did walk in to see her on her very first day and popped back and fore a few times a week just to make sure she was settling in OK. I will miss her if she leaves - more so cos they will want evreything she has been doing and everything I do!! :(

 :barrel:

Casp is back  :drunk:

Been banned for a week and now me week is up I can pop by for short periods only.

Had a bit of an adventure when I made the trip to Croydon and ended up getting there 45 minutes late. Brother in law had recently bought a new sat nav gizmo (Bargain at £145) which is very very good but instead of going round the bottom of the M25 and up to Croydon I decided to follow the sat nav gizmo and go directly through outer London. This proved to be not the best move in the world cos it was stop-start for mile after mile and took nearly 2 hours to do just 25 miles. The result was instead of getting there about 1½ hours early we arrived late and had not time for food so were both late and hungry!!  :u  :lh:  :hithead:

My fault entirely but I must admit that I was most impressed with his NavMan gizmo - totally reliable and very easy to use. (If you want to go via a direct route).

Met my Professor again who is remarkably down to earth and a very likeable person, had loads of eye tests and scans and have now had the same eye re-treated for the 5th and hopefully final time. This is the best experience of any of them - my night vision is totally free of star bursts, flaring or any of the night vision problems that I had before. I no longer have double vision and everyone who had ghosts stood next to them are now on their own for the first time in many years.

With their simulation I was reading the bottom line of the very smallest text on the eye chart which is superb. I had the wavefront treatment which provides the very best scan of the surface of the eye and aims to eliminate the lumps and bumps that cause problems at night and at the moment it seems to have worked perfectly. I have gone from very long sighted in one eye to slightly short sighted, all in about 30 seconds. As the eye heals and the surface smoothes over it will return to a zero prescription.

Whereas last time I was in constant pain from the irritation of the contact lens they fit this time I didn't have to use a single drop of anaesthetic and the recovery has been excellent.

On the Tuesday following treatment my vision had improved so much that I could read the Sky guide on the TV from around 25 feet away. Unfortunatley, the next day this has gone and my vision is now blurry again but that is normal and that sharpness should return shlowly over the next few months. Even if I get near that clarity it is a massive improvement considering all the treatments I have had previously and a huge improvement over the untreated eye.

All being well I should be looking at around February / March for the other eye to be treated, which will be done using the very latest techniques where healing is less than a day and you can see immediately after the procedure.

So far so good - got to remember to keep taking my eye drops and it should continue on this path. Got a scan in Bristol on 17th November where I will find out how well it has been corrected.

Surprisingly enough so am I!! :) :)

I was much better prepared this time with lots of positive mental attitude, albeit slightly diluted by arriving a tad late but we did ring them and warn them that we were still 2 miles away when we were 20 mins late so no problems really.

I was told of some changes but this isn't what I expected either.

They're perhaps making the changes gradually.

I'm waiting for them to make the inevitable fuck up so we can have a good laugh at their expense.

I do, but this time round it is going to be a quick in and out unfortunately - got to be back home for around 5-30 and the appointment is not sceheduled until around 3-30, which doesn't leave a lot of time cos they are always a bit late by that time in the day.

I will be back over again in a month or so and will be back and fore a few times over the coming  months as I get my check-ups, which will be at a more sensible time.

Now last time I went (two weeks ago) I was on me own and had all the time in the world and I was Mr Sad Person sat in the commercial rooms having lunch and a pint all on me ownsome. :(

Will do - didn't say much last time cos I got a lift over and caught the train back and didn't want to drag you into Brizzle itself. I normally have the car, though I use the Park n Ride from Avonmouth but could easily park in the centre, leaving me with the option of driving somewhere else afterwards if that is easier. :)

I'd be easy to find - the one in the black sunglasses on a dull, cloudy day! :)

After sampling the delights of taking 3½ hours to get back home last time by train I may well sample the experience again.  :eek2: Actually that option doesn't sound too bad cos then I could have  :beer1:  and  :hungry1: without thinking of driving back.

Been a wandering this afternoon and found this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NLi_yqO2Cg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NLi_yqO2Cg) on youtube which reminds me of one of the reasons I embarked on all this eye mularky in the first place. It was working when I went last time but kept breaking down so we went on lots of other things instead - including the "Enterprise" type ride shown at 1 min 59 secs. First time I have ridden one of those cos someone told me years ago they make you all icky so I jus never bothered, but they lied to me!!! :)

Went to a special halloween night in Oakwood Park last year in West Wales which didn't start till the evening. All the light bulbs had been replaced with soft orange ones so everything was suitably eerie.

Riding in the dark was a completely different experience - same rides run in the same way but cos visibility was totally different it just gave a totally different ride experience.

I had always wanted to go on one of those "drop towers" but had always thought of something else better to do till I went to Oakwood. In the dark it jus didn't look so high or so scary and I had 3 goes one after the other on "Bounce" which is a drop tower and a launch tower in one.

But will things get more scary if I can see clearly - I already know the answer to that cos most of the time on a new ride I close my eyes anyway!!!  :eek2:  :eek2:

It is only ususally on the second go that I open me peepers to take a sneaky look-see.  :barrel:  :yup:

But it is fun to look at other peeps around you as you ride some of these beasties - hilarious in some cases. Like the guy on a simple chair swing that screamed and shouted behind me to be let off all through the ride - and he was deadly serious. I frubbock if he had been nearer to the ground he would have raised the safety bar and jumped!  :f:  :t:  :lh:  :hithead:

Only one way to really find out though . . . . .   :wave1:

And it stayed that way all the way down with ucky driving conditions. It was dry on the way back though - till we got back to God's land and the heavens opened big time!!

Me is now likely to be going back sometime in early January for the next assessment. Can't book that far ahead at the moment so will decide some time in December when the exact date will be.

But so far so good - me lil eye is behaving itself and things are getting less blury. Just got to keep an eye on it (I know - eye couldn't help it! :)  ) and let them know if anything gets worse.

Update time - my vision has now improved quite noticeably. To the extent that when I was out and about last Saturday I forgot to take me sunglasses off before going into a shop and couldn't be bothered going back to the car. I took them off and managed quite nicely without them for the first time in a very, very long time. :)

At the moment my near vision is quite sharp and my distance vision is improving each day. I will be popping back to see me fave optician probably towards the end of January but so far things are going very well indeed. :) :)

Title: Re: Casper's Eye Operation - Fingers Crossed This Time
Post by: Casper the Ghost on Dec 21, 06, 12:47 AM
In that eye I am unlikely to have the result I should have had if it had worked correctly the first time round but due to the wavefront scanning it should still be very good. Wavefront sends thousands of light beams into the eye and measures what comes out to determine all the imperfections in the lens and cornea. It then allows the laser to be "fine tuned" to give "super sight" that in many cases far exceeds "normal" vision.
If it comes back to what I had briefly on day 4 I will be well chuffed. :)

I wish you all the luck in the world Casper.  Sight is the one thing I dread losing.  I think I could bear losing any of my other senses and even the thought of partial sight (if that was say less than 50%) would worry me.  What I have at present is not perfect and I need to constantly wear specs but it's no worse than many others.  I was recently told I had a touch of glaucoma but so mild that it only needs to be monitored every 6 months.

Keep improving.

Another update - I will be leaving this wet and windy land and heading East on Friday to ole Brizzle town again. I am going back to see me fave optical expert the fair "Morticia" (must tell you the story behind that one day) and as a bonus I am due to meet up with one of the forum members while I am over there too, which should be interesting.
Sight-wise things are still a bit up and down but the change is so gradual that you don't really notice day by day and it is the eye tests that really reveal how much difference there really is. I know it is better but I also know that it is not as improved as I would like it to be, but that is not unusual for me cos I just don't seem to heal as well as other people, or as fast.
More news after next Friday (26th) when Casp is going via train for the first time - hope I don't go the wrong way!! :)

Well me fave optician Morticia has done her thing and pronounced Casp as having 20:20 vision :) which is quite remarkable considering just how long-sighted I became after operation 4 (albeit that was planned).

Read whichever line you can see comfortable she says and I read the 20:20 line, then the one below that and was about to start on the very bottom one as well :)

Still got "smeared" vision (like you write something with an ink pen and accidentally smudge it before it is totally dry - you can see clearly what is there but also a smearing around the letters too).

Methinks I will start leaving the glasses off now and again (I can manage fine on the PC without them) to "train" the eye into working again, after all it has spent 10 years doing not a lot.

Things are good indeed and will still get better - so next visit to Bristow town will be in late April. Maybe next time our respective partners will make it too?

Only thing that spoiled it was playing sardines on the train from Brizzle to Newport cos the dopey gits only put two carriages on when there was enough peeps to fill 4!!

It was MW I did 'that' to... Ray hasn't had that 'pleasure' yet.  >:D

It was Little Solsbury Hill that I just about killed him with.  :)

Parked the car at about the L of Penyrheol, across to Upper Race, following the track across to the farm NW of 'Race' then up onto the moorland along the fenceline that runs between the Upper and the Race. Now that is a hill .... a Welsh hill
