Dumbing Down.........Again
« on: Jan 05, 10, 03:36 PM »
It appears that people today do not understand fractions, so despite the system being in use for over 250 years, the authorities are going to simplify the odds descriptions in Racing.

My thought................. if someone can not understand simple maths, they shouldn't be gambling on horses. ( or in fact on anything )

Indeed.

Next, they'll insist on a warning printed on the betting-slips... "When did you last see a thin bookmaker?"

Err they aren't fractions, they are ratios  ::)

I don't gamble myself, but the UK currently uses a fractional odds betting system.

I have never found it necessary to use any of the fractional maths (i.e. adding fractions to fractions, finding common demoninators and all that stuff) that I learnt in school. And I worked in various financial jobs that used a lot of maths. Just never fractions. Ever. Percentages, yes; ratios, yes; but never fractions.

p.s. Yes, I know that technically a percentage is a fraction.
