Well out of his way, I imagine... not least because batteries were damned expensive in those days!

You occasionally still see clockwork vibrators in the 'medical collectibles' section in Ebay... and they were invented for the doctor's benefit rather than his patient - they were used in the treatment of 'female hysteria' apparently...

I could imagine quite a few females being hysterical at the mere thought of being approached by some leering letch of a doctor with one of those fresh from the fridge.  :o

late 50's very early 60's is typical of that sort of advice

they reprinted a lot of books from the 20's/30's to use in schools then because of lack of funding

Almost all my schoolbooks were either old copies from 20's or straight reprints with almost no updates. Even geography books still had "the British Empire" still in red covering 3/4 of the world

It wasn't until about 64 or 65 that the "sexual revolution"   came in and the first couple of years of the 60's were very repressive ( especially for women)
