Server move
« on: Jan 22, 16, 12:13 PM »
Now I have the forum sorted out, I will be moving the server over the next few days/week
There shouldn't be any real downtime but there might be a short time out while DNS propagates
I am going to try to get a way of doing it without losing any posts so while I move the data, I will put the forum in "maintenance mode" so no one can post

I don't have the exact date & time of the move yet. I am waiting for the new server to be built, and that "Should" be ready within the next 48/72 hours but might be quicker

You will know when it all has been moved, because if you see maintenance mode, it means the old server, but if you don't see it, it will mean the new server

I never disable mod security
I have a very tight mod security on this one, that blocks most attacks and when I couple that with the exploit scanner & firewall, we are pretty safe from most attacks
I tweaked mod security to avoid stupid blocks and tightened the comments spammers & sql injection and XSS  rules to block even more potential attacks but still leave all websites working well and reasonably fast

Ah! That'll be good. :)

Shit, you won't believe how many servers have really crap settings, for modsec. SlowDaddy were/are the worst culprits. I'm not sure they even know it exists, let alone how to configure it.

I remember one site had problems, with that, if a member had the temerity to type "Hot water", as it has the letters "TWAT" in it.

'course, if I mentioned that I once lived in Essex, it went batshit... When Lisa switched hosts, we had trouble with that, for a while.

Had awful problems with a pr0n site getting DDOS attacks, too. Had to hide them behind Cloudflare, in the end. Even two years on, though, that site gets 100+ new members every day, along with 10+ paid subscriptions, to view the good stuff.

That is one reason why I won't use shared hosting and have my own dedicated server. I have total control over it and can configure it  to block /allow what I want

Shared hosting have default configurations that suit an average, not the sort of work I do
I am just moving back to UK/Europe from USA mainly because of the exchange rate which has increased the cost too much over the last few months. Now it will be a set amount with no variation

We moved yesterday and I hope everything is now working. We had a few hiccups and some sites needed amended htaccess files because of the update to apache 2.4 and the different approach that takes to authorisation
If anyone notices any problems please let me know

has anyone noticed if the forum is faster for them ( or worse)
The ping is now approx. 7-9 ms whereas it used to be between 200 -300 on old server
new server is based in Docklands ( London) old server in Provo Utah USA, so much closer for most users here and my other sites

If you have an outlook.com / Hotmail.com /co.uk or live.com email address, you might experience problems receiving emails or forum notifications from the server.
Hotmail/outlook.com appear to haver blocked this new server and it is being unblocked, but might take a few days

We had some problems on old server because the IP range was listed in some black lists ( although the actual server wasn't ) and that caused similar problems

Gmail appears to be OK

Sorry for the inconvenience but outlook.com/Hotmail are over cautious with spam and reject so many innocent emails that it is hardly worth using them
