Windows 10 again
« on: May 23, 18, 10:05 AM »
I was closing down last night & Windows 10 update was waiting to be installed so I let it go ahead, hours later at 1am I decided to let it carry on on its own; when I got up in the morning there had been an error & I couldn't get it working again, so I had to get a 'Geeks 2U'guy to com & fix it, so a couple of hours later & $200 dollars it's working again  ::)

I think my computer being slow didn't help.  ;)

Has this 'Geeks28' chappy been to fix your computer before ?........If so, I suspect a friendship was made, and a conspiracy hatched between them, hence the Geeks2u chappies visit.
PC is happy for all the TLC, and Mr. Fixit is happy collecting $200......... :gig:

I've had Geeks2U about 5 years ago, this was a different chap, American who had been in Oz about 40 years, it was almost tea time when he left & he didn't charge for the extra hour so I told him he could keep the $3 change & I also gave him a cup of tea.  ;D

We had a nice chat about all sorts whilst the computer went through all the fixes.

PS  His wife is used to him being late for tea.   :gig:

He was a big man with a huge stomach & I offered him some choc chip biscuits but he declined, maybe it would have spoilt his tea.  ;)

PS  I have a plumber coming this morning.  ;D

I finally got around to installing Win10 again, but, for some reason my game 'Company of Heroes' + add on packs on Steam, still will not play properly (whereas it used to just fine), as it is jerky and feels like the game is in a big puddle of treacle.
So much disappointment for me.

So, I don't use it as the daily OS and just boot it up to install any updates.

I stick with Win7 (Home) 64bit, and that updates just fine, plays my game without fuss, so I see no reason to run Win10 daily, because it doesn't work properly.
This I think happened just after Xmas after some updates, and it and the clone version were totally screwed up, whereas prior to that it worked just fine, and Win7 was just an alternative to use.
Now, it's the other way round..... ::) ;D

I've seen so many hassles, with W10, that I'm glad a rolled back so soon after installing it. Poor old Lisa loses the touchpad thingy, on her lappy, every time anything updates and that seems a common problem.

I have it on my lappy, which I rarely use, but the thing seems really slow, even compared with XP.

I can't be doing with all the pissing about. W7 has always been excellent on y rig, so why risk buggering that up, just to let Mickeysoft spy on me and dictate more on what I can/can't do with things?

W10 will never, ever go on either of my two desktop rigs, even if they pay me for the "privilege".

Yep, my Toshiba 11" (I think) screen came with Win10, and sometimes it is like running Win98SE again..........it can be soooooooooo slow.
But then I only use it at night/morning in bed for TV shows and films, no email or anything else.

Win 10 pisses me off with all the crud that comes pre-installed, and it takes me quite a while to go through all the crap like X Box (I don't have one !), cloud, sports, newsjust to see what I am able to uninstall, as I have no intention of using any of them.

I suppose it is all there for the kiddies etc., with their X Boxes, iPhones and other things I don't care about. Previous OS's used to be just PC related, rather than have apps installed to suit everyone's taste......which is why I spend a fair bit of time trying to get rid of it all, as it takes up HDD/SSD space.
I guess that's a bit of left over from the days when I only had a 4GB HDD, and it didn't take long to fill that up even back then... ;D

Oh, I have various scripts that got rid of that crap. But, of course, every update put it all back!

So, updates disabled. If I'm a security risk, tough shit.

Yeah, I am beginning to feel the same way on this laptop, because since the updates messed about with it. I could try rolling them back, but that would probably break something afterwards.
I only use it for films, YT, and iplayer (when there is something actually worth a look), and nothing else.

I do have a disc with XP Pro Corp (thanks RSU), and tried to install it a couple of years ago, but it didn't go well.... ;D
I used to like XP, and it was welcome after Windows ME..... ;D

Yep, the only OS I didn't like, although I downloaded the ME defragger to use on Win98SE because it worked better, and still have it on a disc somewhere... :D

Shit... I think I only ever defragged once, ever, when I had 98SE.

Don't see the point, to be honest. The benefits never outweighed the risks, for me.

My first was a 'donated': Win98, then Win98SE. ME, XP Corp. Pro, then I actually bought: Vista 32/64bit and liked it, Win 7, Win 8 then 8.1 and Win10.
All on disc/USB sticks.
I also bought some KEYS for W7 and 10 quite cheap some years ago, and just had to download the OS and apply the key..... ;D 8)

I can go back further than that. Started with a dual boot PC with OS2 and W3 or 3.1. Was given 3.1.1, which had network ability and progressed through W95, W98 etc. Never had NT4 but iirc that was the predecessor to XP, with which I was at the peak of my IT ability. Oh happy days. Never had ME, Vista or W8 either.

I didn't have a PC until about 1999 when my brother and wife stayed over here for a year. Mainly for memory lane visits which my brother wanted to visit, some in England that his wife wanted to visit, which was to visit places where her ancestors lived.
This was funded by them both working in our local hospital, he was on security and she was an oncology nurse.

Anyway, he left behind his PC which was one of those table top boxes, with the CRT 17" monitor sitting on top of it, and used it for banking and emails and stuff.
It was an Intel 66mhz cpu, something like 2 x 4MB sticks of memory, built in graphics, and a 4 or 8MB HDD, whatever it was, but it filled up quite quickly so uninstalling stuff was needed to install something else, and of course a floppy drive..... ;D

Later on I got an 80GB drive and I think back then it was about 10 per gig..........so expensive.

I singed up with Line One for dial up, and then some other ISP that I can't quite remember. before my local ISP started up and grabbed the rep by the ears, and said 'Where do I sign for BB !.
I think it was about 128MB, and far superior to dial up.

The I wanted something bigger and faster, so since I had been given a quite large sum of money, I bought one from a bloke (who I though was a decent bloke), and was supposed to build me one.
It turned out that it was a second hand one from some computer shop for a bit less than the 500 I gave him (a big sum back in the early 2000's), so he made a nice profit from me.
It was a lot faster than the old one, so I just had to live with it.

Anyway a few years later I got made redundant as the firm was sold to someone else, so I though 'bugger it, I will build my own, how hard can it be ?'
I had fun searching for all the parts on the internet sites, and it turned out that it wasn't that hard after all.
Proof of this was that it didn't go bang in a cloud of smoke when I turned it on for the first time.

So after that, I just built my own, and sometimes for my two sons as well.

So today, my PC will probably out live me, so I have no intentions of building a new one....... ;D

Was it someone from IBM (?) that said that PC's would never catch on ?
Or my dad telling my sister who had a crush on Elvis, that now he is in the army, he would never be heard from again ?

Oh well Yvonne, at least I should have until about until 2021 left then....... :gig:

Ha, I recently had an endoscopy !!  ;D :flowers:
So it appears I have some stomach ulcers........deep joy.

As for Windows Bob, I think I vaguely remember that from my Win98/SE days.
Also that annoying 'paper clip' which to me is like the annoying Cortana and Cloud now on Win10.

Oh my quack gave me some Omeprazole capsules, but not sure they are doing any good.
But at least the good news was, that I am not pregnant !!  ;D

I have had an unexpected appointment letter from the Consultant chappy, for the end of this month....hmmmm, good news, just a check up perhaps, bad news, have I made a Will yet ?
That sort of thing.... ;D

Hope the capsules work for you, if it caused by a virus they should.

Speaking of pregnant, the female of the couple that took our old caravan, spied the neighbour's cat in our yard & was talking to it asking if it was pregnant, when I told her his name was Kevin, he would have nothing to do with her after that.  :gig:

Hope it's good news with the consultant.

Also sorry to hear about your ulcers, I've had a blood test that checks for the antibodies to a bug that can cause them and fortunately I have never had it and haven't got it. I'm taking Lansoprazole which is similar to Omeprazole, had to stop taking it for 2 weeks before the blood test and as far as reducing reflux etc it most certainly does work it was an uncomfortable fortnight.

BOB  :hm: :comp1:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Bob I liked what it says near the end "In 2015, a successor to Microsoft BOB was released called Windows 10."  :hysterical:

That annoying paper clip was called Clippit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Assistant. I shudder when I recall how helpful it was. "It looks like you are writing a suicide note, would you like help?"  :axe:

I had to laugh at the cat one Yvonne..... ;D

I only went to my quack because I have been suffering from afternoon tiredness, and loss of appetite.
I'd have have a nice hot meal in the evening, then after a short while my stomach would say 'I am bored with this, stop eating', so I did and wasted half a meal.

I then had the bright idea of swapping to a sort of salad based meal, just adding jacket spud, some iceberg lettuce and sliced tomato with something like cooked chicken/chicken in bread crumbs, gammon ham, sort of things.

Yep I know, ideal grub in the middle of winter.... ;D

But it sort of worked, and I began to feel better, but turned up for the endoscopy appointment anyway.
I like discomfort !  ::)

But, the very attractive Chinese Doctor who was ramming the hose pipe and camera down my guts, was a nice distraction, and I was very brave, and didn't cry like a little girl.... 8) ;D

Anyway, that's life, so I keep calm and carry on... :gig:

Thanks for those links Obblie, they bring back memories.... ;D

In the early days, I fell into the trap of downloading screen savers and animated ones as well, tool bars, and other crap, which as far as I know, the only virus I have ever given a home to.
I couldn't understand why my cursor was moving all over the screen, without any guidance from me.
I think 'hot bar' was the main culprit amongst others....

So that cost me ten quid to have a bloke come out and re-install Win98 or SE, receive a lecture about downloading all this fancy bad for my PC crap, and learnt a few lessons at the same time.

Today I just use the Windows firewall, and MSE, and leave it at that.
Used to run MBAM. which I paid for the full version, but then got demanding nags to pay 30 for another year...........so I got rid of it......even the 'free' version, as that kept nagging me to upgrade.

We live and learn huh ?

Omeprazole... If they don't do it, for you, get them to try you on Lanzoprezole and/or Ranitidine.

I'm on both.  :)

Cheers mate.
I had an appointment today to see the Consultant chappie at our hospital that I met originally, after getting a letter in the post for this appointment.
My initial thought was 'oh crap, now what ?'
Anyway, he asked the usual questions like........'how are you  ?'......'do you feel any better ?' etc....
I just said that my belly still feels a bit like the after affects of the camera shoved down my throat to have a rummage about............and 'have you ever had an endoscopy yourself my good man ?'.
He hadn't, so doesn't know what I am trying to tell him what my guts feel like.
Not an ache, no pain, just a strong feeling of 'butterflies' who are extremely energetic buzzing about down there.

Anyway, the result is that I will be getting an appointment letter in the post for a CT scan, so that they can have a much better look around in glorious colour, and probably find that all my internal organs need replacing, and not to start reading a very big book.  :o :nooo:

Or, I may get told that I am as fit as a fiddle, and should take up mountain climbing, skiing, bungee jumping, and other relaxing sports.

Time will tell.... :)
