Even better, use Opera, or Firefox!

and thay had exactly the same problems and were also cured but it was harder to update opera & FF as they needed completely new installs whereas IE only needed a patch

They had the same problems, true. Not a billionth of all the others, though, ay?

Hi - I'm a tad confused..

Did the tests - opera passed with java enabled Firefox didn't and I have updated both. When I disable java in F Fox it passes test? I have emailed Secunia...

Any ideas...what's best - Java or not...and exactly what does it do?

PCKitty..

Java is a computer equivalent to Esperanto... a specially-devised language that 'any type' of computer can understand if it has the right software installed.

It's used when a website needs to do complex things, like run a game on your machine for example... but the trouble is like almost anything powerful it can be misused.

I'd suggest having Java installed, but switched off unless you're somewhere you know is going to need it... that way you'll avoid nasty surprises.

In Opera, there's a checkbox under tools - preferences... Firefox I don't know about but no doubt Derek will be able to tell you. :)

Innit weird?

I've always had Java totally enabled and I've never, ever, had any problems, with it.

I know that that's tempting fate, somewhat. But, when you consider some of the places I've been known to investigate, you'd think I'd be a prime target...

Weird.

Hi Derek - I don't see Java in Add/remove progs. - does that mean I don't have it? If so, I might as well disable it in Firefox anyway....I've only once or twice got a message that I need Sun Java...so obviously for what I do on the Web it's not a priority? What do you think? ???

Thanks for the info Richard on Java - big help...

Thanks PCKitty... :hat3:

I got the email and you obviously have some java on the system but what I'm not sure

If you aren't getting any requests from the sites you use for java then don't worry about it for now but I would just like to make sure you don't have an out of date vulnerable version so

Open HJT press config/misc tools & select uninstall manager, press save list and post that list back here please

No sign of JAVA there at all
so it isn't installed and the folders are empty folders most probably

If you find you want or need it then download it but it's about 100mb so takes ages on dial up

Many web sites do use it but it isn't essential for anything important normally though some programs will use it

I've already had one computer die a horrible death from computer viruses.
If I could, I get another mac.  Love those.  NEVER had a virus when I used a mac.

It's funny, I can never find anyone giving away a mac.  It's always ancient pc's.  :yuck:

Not sure if it was best to post here or start a new thread in the PC Help forum so please move if necessary.

I was using FireFox V1.5 and followed the link at the Secunia site and according to the pics below I was at risk

I then upgraded to FireFox V 2, rerun the test and got exactly the same ::)
